Recently a group of our great frontline registered nurses, Brittney Mullen, BSN, RN, Emergency Department; Holly House, BSN, RN, CMSRN, Spine/Orthopedics Unit; Mandy Raikes, RN, Medical-Surgical ICU and Shawn Beane, BSN, RN, Practice/Clinical Manager, Outpatient Wound Healing and Hyperbaric Center, joined me and others at the 2017 Magnet® Conference in Houston, Texas, with approximately 8,000 other RNs. Wow, what an exciting event and opportunity! There were many learning opportunities from Magnet® teams from across the country and internationally.

On our way to Magnet®

Mission Health’s strategic plan includes achieving the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet® designation, as part of becoming A Great Place to Work and Practice. We are on our way! As you are probably aware, Mission Hospital, along with our outpatient areas, began our official Magnet® Journey when we formally submitted our application in August.

The Magnet® Impact

Magnet® Model (2017) nursecredentialing.org/MagnetModel

Consumers rely on Magnet® designation as the ultimate credential for the highest quality nursing in the nation. The Magnet Recognition Program® recognizes healthcare organizations for quality patient care, nursing excellence and innovations in professional nursing practice. Others benefits of achieving Magnet® are:

  • Positive impact on recruitment and retention of top talent that extends beyond nursing to include physicians and other specialties
  • Improved patient care, safety and satisfaction
  • Fosters collaborative culture
  • Advances nursing standards and practice
  • Grows business and financial success

Check out the ANCC website to learn more.

Join us on our journey to Magnet®

Each month we have a Magnet® Champion team meeting where representatives from across the inpatient and outpatient areas come together to help lead us in this effort.  We meet the fourth Thursday of each month from 0815 to 0900 in Glenn Theater. Our Magnet® Program Director, Debbie Krueger, MSN, RN, NE-BC, CHTP, and I have a grand time participating with such an awesome group!

I will keep you abreast of our progress, as we collect our sources of evidence (SOE), which includes stories, outcome metrics and nursing demographics, highlighting the excellent nursing and teamwork that each of you provide every day. To learn more, connect with your Magnet® Champion. If your unit has not yet participated and you are interested, please speak with your leader or Debbie Krueger. I welcome you all to be a part of this work!
